DON’T COME KNOCKIN’

I just remembered that I had that all-too intense dream early Monday morning, before I left Seattle, about being there in my friend’s condo - asleep - and an earthquake shaking everything. The actual dream was that a small party of people came tromping into their unit where I was staying, waking me and carrying on with their libation as if I weren't there... then a significant shudder and shake and everything becoming chaotic for a number of minutes.

Today, here in L.A., a mere 48 hours later, there was a 5.4 magnitude earthquake. Fun coincidence.

It was an exciting and a little freaky feeling - the first earthquake I have REAlly been in. During my first-first one (Seattle 2001 Nisqually quake) - I was in bed ill at my mom’s place in Shoreline. The quake woke me up and I remember thinking it was the coolest feeling laying on a soft mattress above rolling and seemingly soft earth.

Today I ran outside into the flat and open parking lot of Current's Sonicpool office just in time to see distant windows flutter on other low-slung buildings... I imagined that every solid man-made thing I could see was just as I was back in Shorline... laying on a soft mattress of earth.

One day this bed will really shake. 'Big one' here in L.A. within 30 years they say? I can't decide if that is a problem for me or not.

CURRENT TV IN MINDANAO

Current, the company I work for, has an award winning journalism team that travels the world to report on the tough stories... some are more or less widely known issues, others are very obscure angles on little-known places and people. All of it is good - or at least has a great possibility to DO good.

In this story Tracy Chang travels to the southern part of my mother's home country - the Philippines - to explore the complicated war with Muslim extremists who live an operate in that region.

COLDPLAY: VIOLET HILL

I love Coldplay's alternative video for their song "Violet Hill". Great this montage of dancing politicians with Chris Martin crooning about the rest of us freezing down below.

Was a long and dark December
From the rooftops I remember
There was snow
White snow

Clearly I remember
From the windows they were watching
While we froze
Down below

When the future's architectured
By a carnival of idiots on show
You'd better lie low

If you love me
Won't you let me know?

Was a long and dark December
When the banks became cathedrals
And the fog
Became God

Priests clutched onto bibles
Hollowed out to fit their rifles
And the cross was held aloft

Bury me in honor
When I'm dead and hit the ground
A love back home unfolds

If you love me
Won't you let me know?

I don't want to be a soldier
Who the captain of some sinking ship
Would stow, far below

So if you love me
Why'd you let me go?

I took my love down to Violet Hill
There we sat in snow
All that time she was silent still

So if you love me
Won't you let me know?

If you love me,
Won't you let me know?
